How to Prepare Your Hot Tub for Fall
As the summer heat fades and the air starts to crisp, you may find yourself wanting to enjoy a soak in the hot tub more often to experience the temperature contrast between the air and the water. As the months get colder, it’s important to perform fall hot tub maintenance.
Deep Clean the Tub
The start of the new season is a great opportunity to really engage in fall hot tub care. It’s still warm enough to spend the time outside, and it shouldn’t be unbearably hot.
First, shut off the heat and drain your tub according to your manufacturer’s instructions. Use a gentle cleaner and a rag to wipe down the shell. Focus on areas with water line stains and scale build-up. Rinse out the tub before refilling it. Take the opportunity to clean/replace your filters as well. Make sure all chemicals are balanced in your tub before use.
While you’re cleaning the tub, don’t forget to gently clean and treat your spa cover, too.
Set an Appropriate Temperature
During the summer months, the warm air may have allowed you to get away with lower temperature settings. However, as the air cools, you’ll need to keep your temperature relatively high in order to keep it warm enough to comfortably use. The temperature should be between 100 and 104 degrees.
Check for Freeze Protection
If your hot tub loses power, without freeze protection, your hot tub could reset to a temperature that is too low to prevent freezing. Freeze protection kicks in when a hot tub regains power. It automatically circulates the water and ups the temperature.
Freeze protection is often a default setting, but it’s a good idea to check before the weather gets too cold. Remember to regularly check on your hot tub through colder months even if it isn’t in use.
Enjoy Your Hot Tub
After you’ve gone through all of the work to clean and prepare your hot tub for the change in season, take time to enjoy it. Enjoy the cool air combined with the warm water.
Install a bird feeder near your hot tub to enjoy the variety of birds that might stop by as they travel south. Set up an outdoor movie screen in your backyard, and enjoy watching your favorite film with friends or family from the comfort of a hot tub. Spend an evening appreciating the Fall sky.
